2011 Trout Angler Logs

In an effort to get a better handle on what is occurring with our inland lake trout fisheries, Northeast Indiana Trout Association encouraged their members and other trout anglers to keep records of their trout fishing trips during the 2011 season. 

At the end of 2011, five angler logs were returned.  One log was from a fly fisherman while four were from anglers trolling and or fishing with conventional gear.

Individual anglers caught between 0.40 and 1.14 rainbow trout per hour and averaged 0.81 per hour.   The highest individual catch rate was from the angler who fished the least.  Average catch rates per lake ranged from 0 at Clear to 0.85 at Gage.   Although total effort at Gage was relatively low, the high catch rate in April (3 trout per hour) strongly influenced the average catch rate at Gage. 

July and August fishing trips made up 21% of the effort and 8% of the catch.   None of these anglers fished Oliver in July and less than 10 hours were spent fishing Oliver in August.  Historically, these were prime months for trolling and night fishing.      

There were only two reported night fishing trips for all of the lakes combined.

Trout are surviving through the summer at Oliver as the catch in Dec was certainly impressive.  Without these observation and reports, one might have concluded that trout are not surviving the summer months. 

Trout fishing at Big and Little Cedar provided the most consistent catch through July which was the second to last fishing trip at Cedar for the season.

Holdover rainbows and or those that were 15 inches or larger made up 30% of the overall catch.

In addition to the 227 rainbows, 10 browns were caught.

The size of the 2011 angler log sample is small and the information needs to be handled with caution.  However, there is still value in recording these types of observations and catch information.  For example, the December catch at Oliver and the catch through July at Cedar are especially noteworthy.
