INDIANA TROUT BY WILLIAM LAVIGNE This story begins in December with the arrival of Rainbow Trout eggs at a couple of well looked after hatcheries and involves numerous man-hours, more than a few miles of road time and lots of fish food. Fifteen months later the Rainbows are stocked and ready for you to catch. Here’s how it goes. Each year, around the middle of December, one hundred thousand eyed eggs (i.e. fertilized) are received at the Fawn River Hatchery. The usefulness of the London Strain brood stock of Rainbow Trout was nearing its end. This prompted the IDNR’s decision to switch to purchasing eyed eggs as opposed to the extra expense and hassle of re-establishing and maintaining a new brood stock. »»»read more ... |
